I like to always look into the background stories of the astrology signs to better understand the attributions and characteristics of the sign. The story of the birth of the Cancer constellation is another one found in the Scriptures of Delphi. 
In the underwater kingdom of the Sea God Poseidon, resided a giant crab named Crios. Crios was large and strong, and had been given the gift of immortality by Poseidon himself. His main gig was protecting the sea nymphs (which were basically the Sea God's daughters) and keeping them from harm. Well it came about that a nasty monster God, Typhon, went on a rampage through Olympus and terrorized the Greek Gods for awhile. During this time most of the God's went into hiding to escape Typhon's wrath, and Poseidon was one of them. But before he stepped away, Poseidon left Crios in charge of preserving the lives of all the sea nymphs. 
Taking his role of protector very seriously, Crios forbade any of the nymphs to ever leave his sight. Understandably the girls grew restless and eventually developed and executed a plan of escape. Alone in the open ocean and in great danger, Crios devised his own plan. He realized he himself could not go after the escaped sea nymphs and leave the others (who had not escaped) alone and vulnerable, so he recruited the help of Vamari, a giant squid. However, Vamari was not the friend Crios believed him to be and was actually a predator. When Vamari located the lost sea nymphs he ate them, one by one, until there were none left. Upon returning to Crios, Vamari expressed defeat and said that he was unable to find any of the nymphs. But Crios could see through his rouse, and knew that he was lying. Crios was furious and engaged Vamari in a deadly battle that lasted for hours. Crios eventually won the battle and killed the squid, but he was left badly injured. Being immortal, he couldn't die from his injuries but he was left in immense pain. Upon Poseidon's arrival back to his kingdom he was informed of what had happened to his sea nymphs and the incredible bravery and strength of Crios. Thankful for his loyalty and valor, Poseidon transformed Crios into the constellation of Cancer, so that he may remain immortal but be free from his pain.
