"I name her Inanna, the first daughter of the moon, the morning and evening star, who will be the great goddess of love and war..."

Picture
Babalon is the meeting point of ceremonial magick and the witch cult. She is a power that comes out of the past and resonates into the Now with the compelling song of the witch woman. She is both the primal form of the Goddess from the far and distant past and the most modern icon of post-human style.  - Peter Grey, THE RED GODDESS

She is the embodiment of mystery. She represents the Female sexual impulse and the liberated Woman. She is mother, sister, daughter, queen, whore, witch. She is the one who gives little babies their first breathes and the one who mercilessly rips it away. She is sex. She is war. She is Babalon.

Babalon is worshiped as Goddess in the mystical tradition of Thelema, created in 1904 by the infamous Aleister Crowley. Crowley forms his image of the Goddess - the Eternal Feminine - in a way to both insult that which he finds most threatening to everything he is (the Bible) and to also fulfill every ounce of his primal desires. Enter BABALON: mother of abominations, icon of everything sexual and beautiful and desirable, and the root of all feminine damnation.
It's no secret the Bible is all bros before hoes, and the descriptions of the Mother Goddess throughout the book of Revelations is no exception. The basis of all the Abrahamic faiths would have us believe the entirety of creation was sprung forth from a single male entity. This is Zeus and Athena all over again. Not only does the Bible cult wish to strip away the miraculous gift of birth from the Feminine but they also seek to censor Her entire life. In the Bible we see Mary, the most respected and loved woman figure, making a graceful transition from virgin to mother without ever actually committing the female sin of sexual intercourse. The women of the Bible (and subsequently the majority of the present day western world) were expected to readily and joyfully provide fulfillment for every desire and need of the male society while never experiencing or seeking enjoyment for themselves and constantly maintaining an air of innocence and "purity". So the beautiful, fruitful, and highly sexual images we see in books like Revelations are not only seen as an abomination but a very threatening image to all the bros.

what better place to explore the primal and ancient sacred feminine than in the midst of one of the major wars waged against her: THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS.

There i saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names that had seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was written MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT. THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her I wondered with great admiration.
Not only does John give us a deliciously seductive description of the Goddess in Revelations 17:4, he admits to be taken aback by Her lustful beauty. The visions of John of Patmos, recorded in the book of Revelations, is interestingly similar to the ramblings of a heavily intoxicated hippy at a psychedelic festival. The whole thing reminds me of a time when a very 'spiritual' acquaintance of mine decided to smoke Salvia and go on to experience, what she believed to be, the most enlightening trip of her life. Whether it be an overload of DMT released from his feeble pineal gland, or the sipping of peyote from a cup, Saint John the Evangelist had himself a genuine episode of tripping fucking balls.
The authenticity of this vision is not being argued - quite the contrary. I believe the visions revealed to John where very much real, and very much important. However, the ideas and images presented had to squeeze through the narrow Jehovah shaped funnel of a mind to only come out on the other side leaving John, and the rest of the Christians, really reaching for explanations and interpretations.
Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all the nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornications. Revelations 14:8
On the one hand, we have images of a powerfully reproductive female riding a dragon - which of course is blasphemy. After all, in John's time females were considered property and under the control of their fathers until they were married, at which time control passed over to their husbands. Women were not allowed to participate in religious matters, much less be exalted as a deity figure. So we see the Great Mother being portrayed as the living embodiment of sin and the city of Babylon itself.
And there appeared a great wonder in heaven: a woman clothed with the Sun, and the Moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. Revelations 12:1
Yet on the other hand, when the other side of this imagery is the beautiful and grand descriptions John offers us, it naturally must be the Virgin Mary. To say this interpretation is a stretch would be quite the understatement. But can you blame them? This beautiful and royal vision of the Goddess, being presented to a disciple of Christ no less, is not only threatening to the patriarchal society as a whole but, as Peter Grey puts it: a great danger to Jehovah's one-man show. The incredible pagan influence in this scene alone is enough to make any occultist foam at the mouth. And don't even get me started on all the alchemy involved in the mixing of the dragon's seed and the Woman's moon blood.

Revelations 12:
2 She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on its heads.4 Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child the moment he was born."

But let's not let all this talk of fertile ladies riding beasts and having sex distract us from the real dragon in the room.. John's vision is, at best, reminiscent of older traditions and myths that have (without welcome, no doubt) taken root in the Christian man's brain only to rear their horny heads in all of his wet dreams - and at worst, straight up plagiarism.

"All I get is that the Apocalypse was the recension of a dozen or so totally disconnected allegories, that were pieced together, and ruthlessly planed down to make them into a connected account; and that recension was re-written and edited in the interests of Christianity, because people were complaining that Christianity could show no true spiritual knowledge, or any food for the best minds: nothing but miracles, which only deceived the most ignorant, and Theology, which only suited pedants. So a man got hold of this recension, and turned it Christian, and imitated the style of John. And this explains why the end of the world does not happen every few years, as advertised."

I have to agree with Crowley on this one.  But if there is one point that we can take away from all this talk of whores and dragon semen it’s this: woman is bad. If there ever was a fall of man than the blame must undoubtedly lie with the woman. In Jewish mythology, this isn’t even enough, and they take it a step further claiming that the Serpent who tricked Eve, who tricked Adam, was none other than SURPRISE , also a woman – Lilith.
What we have here presented to us in Revelations is the most primal image of The Goddess. Babalon, the Holy Whore is the Sacred Feminine, stripped of her comforting cloak of nurturing mother only to reveal the most primitive nature of Sex, Desire, and Fertile Creator - all qualities that have been continuously painted with negativity over and over again when found present within women, yet remain to be our divine birth right of royal jewels.

She has been known by many names: Babalon, Inanna, Ishtar, Astarte, Lilith.. the list goes on. And although history has sought to silence and degrade Her, dethrone and demonize Her, She stands strong and refuses to be silenced. Every time a woman is suppressed, used, censored, demoralized, and forced into the mold of a-sexual servitude The Goddess rises up in rage and vengeance.

"HER TIME IS NOW" – The Book of Babalon, Jack Parsons.

Picture
This is the Mystery of Babylon, the Mother of Abominations, and this is the mystery of her adulteries, for she hath yielded up herself to everything that liveth, and hath become a partaker in its mystery. And because she hath made her self the servant of each, therefore is she become the mistress of all. Not as yet canst thou comprehend her glory.
Beautiful art thou, O Babylon, and desirable, for thou hast given thyself to everything that liveth, and thy weakness hath subdued their strength. For in that union thou didst understand. Therefore art thou called Understanding, O Babylon, Lady of the Night!
